Here are some of the pics I took from NYC! I got ToNs of cute ones! I'll post more later! It was so fun to be able to spend time with you guys again, even though I was home only a few days earlier. We totally missed Trent, Kent, Shan and Madi!** New York is so cool! With all the movies, medi and hype it was crazy being there and seeing it all for myself. We had a bLaSt!!! Mom got the girls little scrapbooks to put stuff we picked up along the way and journal about our FuN times! I know it's something I'm going to be able to look back on and enjoy and miss like CrAzY! Colin and Kelceys house was so cute, as well as Conneticut itself. I can't believe how green and lush it is there! I guess that's why it rained while we were there. What a GrEaT place to visit. Okay, so let me just say I look so so ugly in this picture. I didn't wear any makeup all trip! Yeah, not a good idea! I thought if I didn't wear make up I would get a fabulous tan, not so much! My hair is a whole different awful story. Basically I shouldn't have even posted this pic, anyway....we had a Great time! The weather was Great and the company was even better! We are hopefully coming home to see you all May 17ish! We'll see. I still plan on going to Conneticut the first of June! Yay! That will be SO fun! I love everyone and miss you all Tonz!!

We were noticing that Gremlin was getting dangerously skinny and unnaturally lethargic, so a week and a half ago (last Tuesday) we took her to the vet's to get her checked out. They took some blood for a test because her symptoms could be a few different things, none of them good.

They called back the next day and said that her kidneys were failing and it was only a matter of time until she died. By the time symptoms show up it's already too late to really do anything. You can try to treat it, the vet said, but that requires a few days of hospitalization and daily injection of fluids to keep her hydrated. He said that even with treatment, he'd never seen a cat last more than a year.

Gremlin didn't look like she was in pain, so we didn't want to put her down right away. We just fed her a high-calorie food with a syringe twice a day (she wouldn't eat on her own). And we waited for it to get bad enough to put her down.

Luckily, it never got that bad, and Gremlin died peacefully (we hope and assume) on Wednesday. We buried her next to Tex.

The whole experience was about as horrible as you can imagine. I always figured that Tiger would die first (from a heart attack, or something) and Gremlin would live with me until we both were old and gray. So now it's up to Tiger to keep me company for the next 60 years, and for some reason I don't think that's going to happen. So the whole "Gremlin is on her deathbed" announcement was a bit of a shocker, but at least I had a week to say goodbye.

This may sound strange and a bit pathetic, but if there's one thing I've learned from this, it's how grateful I am for the gospel. Not knowing if Gremlin will be with me in the afterlife is really terrifying. And she's just a cat. I can't imagine how terrifying it would be not knowing if my own family will be together forever. But I know that families can be together forever, and that our family will be together forever. I'm grateful for parents who married in the temple and will allow us to be an eternal family, and I'm gratful for the example of my brother and sisters who have married in the temple and are starting their eternal families.

I love you guys!

I'm sure you're all eagerly anticipating my response to all your interpretations, so basically: there was no intention. I just painted the picture just to paint it.

If you want a little more explanation, here's the short response I wrote for class:

"In class we studied how the intention of the author can be reinterpreted to create a different (and sometimes better) meaning for the piece of art. [Just to explain a bit more: we read an essay by a guy named Beardsley who talked about how the intention an artist has when making a piece or art (or the statement/message he's trying to convey) shouldn't always be accepted by the viewer - the viewer should get whatever message he wants out of the art, not necessarily what the author intented. Beardsley gives an example of an English poet who wrote a poem that was praising the Queen and being all patriotic and wishing the best for England, but another poet read the poem and thought it was incredibly sarcastic and satirical. So Beardsley said that since the poem worked better as satire, that's how it should be viewed, even though the author's intent was sincere patriotism.] I agree with Beardsley’s point that the intention of the author should not be the only definitive meaning for that piece. Beardsley shares some examples of this, but I feel that in most cases, if the author has a specific intention in mind when creating a piece of art, that intention is clearly conveyed to the viewers. So I wanted to evaluate how a lack of author’s intention affects the interpretation of that piece of art.

"To accomplish this, I attempted to paint a picture without any intention – to paint a picture just to paint it. My painting isn’t a social commentary on current events, it isn’t a (conscious) manifestation of my feelings toward a certain subject; I just painted a silly image that randomly popped into my head.

"To determine if and how my lack of intentions were conveyed through the painting to the viewer, I asked a handful of people what they felt my intention was when creating the painting. Most of them said something to the effect of “even when bad things are happening in your life, you can still be happy”. It’s safe to assume that this interpretation stemmed from the smiley face formed by the cow’s horns and the raindrops. I can honestly say that this smiley face was completely unintentional. I had no desire to include a smiley face in the painting. I was simply painting rain drops and I didn’t notice until after the painting was completed that the drops formed a smiley face.

"I think that most people want every piece of art to have an intention, a purpose. They don’t want things to exist without a meaning. And if an artist goes about creating art without any specific intention in mind, it is easy to accidently slip something into the piece that people will latch onto and say “that is the intention”. Just like Beardsley says, however, sometimes the intentions of the author shouldn’t be respected, sometimes the art becomes something greater than the author intended it to be. I myself have begun to call my painting Happy Cow. I didn’t intend for the cow to be happy, but the painting created its own intention and changed from a simple meaningless image to a powerful and inspirational message. I think now if people looked at the painting and simply said “this is a silly little doodle from a silly little college boy” as it was originally intended to be, they would be missing out on a valuable aesthetic experience."

But, Colin's response was pretty spot-on; I do think it's ridiculous that people get paid for abstract art, and there is way too much overanalysis in art (especially literature and visual arts). Even if that's not what this particular project was specifically about.

Greetings from Mexico...

Just wanted to say HELLO to everyone! Trent and I just returned from Ruidoso New Mexico! It's about 2 hours from the Pass and quite similar to Park City! We decided that since we couldn't go to Island Park with the rest of the family we would rent our own condo for the weekend! It was supposed to snow all weekend, but much to our delight we got nothin! It was definitly cold though! Luckily we had a hot tub on our balcony and got warmed up pretty quick! For those of you with a Wii, I thought you might be interested in knowing that Nintendo is giving away free jackets for Wii remotes. Jackets are little jackets that supposedly protect the remote from injury if you drop it during play, or something. It's not much, but its free stuff, so you can't really complain.

They're giving jackets away for free because from now on all Wii remotes will already come with jackets, so for those of us that bought them before then, we can order them for free. You can order up to four, I think.

One Big Happy Family! Well here's the Best picture I got on my camera! Everyone had their eyes open and were smiling, for the most part Kent! I edited it on Picasa, but I guess it didn't change it for good! I made it black and white and cropped it alittle! Trent turned 24 on Saturday! We got our pictures taken for our Christmas cards! We are excited for everyone to recieve there's in the mail! For dinner on Saturday me, Trent, Nicole, Justin, Todd and Jenny went to Famous Daves! Our friends were nice enough to pay for our dinner and then everyone came over to our house for Better-Than-Sex-Cake!! It sure was delicious! Trent got Mastermind and Battleship from me! We can get pretty bored on the weekend and week nights, so we play games! It was getting old losing in Chinese Checkers every time we played, so I needed to bring some new games to the table! We went to Plymouth this weekend to do something festive for Thanksgiving. This is our last Holiday season in Connecticut! It is so crazy how fast the time is flying by. Early Thanksgiving

No pictures of today's festivities but it sure was a good time. We had the Haacke family Thanksgiving at the Hill house today. We gathered and ate downstairs for a change and it was so nice to have a little extra room. Everyone was there except the Hendersons, the Colin Hills, the Austins and Anne (and we missed you!). Blaine (aka Martha Stewart) was in charge of the craft and we made small crafty Christmas trees to sell at the Festival of Trees. We even had guys tying fabric strips around dowels and gluing little wooden stars on the top. Jason learned a new word - "raffia" and we were happy to do it "for the children".
The fam decided to take up a collection and make a donation instead of exchanging gifts this year. It is still undecided where the donation will go, but this way everyone can donate as much or as little as they want and we will be helping someone less fortunate this Christmas. Have a great Thanksgiving this week. Can't wait to hear from the adventurers at Plymouth.

what happens in mexico, stays in mexico??

Can I just say, I Hate Mexico! Trent and I thought it would be a Great idea to visit the Juarez Temple on our Friday night date night! Trent hasn't been to the Juarez Temple and I had only been once. We decided to take the toll bridge because it was much faster than taking the free bridge. When I last went with the ward on ward temple night we also used the toll bridge, so that's the way I knew how to get to the Temple. So I thought! Talk about frustrating and scarey! Once we crossed into Mexico I couldn't tell one ghetto block from the next! We ended up driving around the Whole city of Juarez for 1 1/2 hours with no luck! I thought I would totally recognize where to go! Ummm No. It was dark and my sense of direction went right out the window! Well after driving up and down a few roads and some illegal u-turns we found the same bridge we paid to get over to that stupid country. Thinking you could just pay and quickly return to America, without the 2 hour wait on the free bridge, we pulled up to the guard to pay the fee. He asked us to show our express pass to continue through. What express pass you ask? Apparently the one you need to exit the toll bridge or else you get a hefty $5,000 fine! Yeah we had no idea we weren't allowed to go on this bridge! All I have to say is it totally sucked watching a german shepard sniff and rummage through your car! I couldn't handle it anymore! I was in tears by the time we actually made it back home! Well I guess next time we go on a sweet Temple trip we'll take someone who knows where to go! We thought it would be so nice to visit the Temple together and feel the spirit! I guess next time I go ward Temple night I'll write the directions down! Sorry babe for getting us lost and ruining a night we thought would be so Perfect!
p.s. no one ever ask me for directions! Unless you wanna drive around aimlessly for many hours! thank you thank you

We had a Blast at our Ward Party Friday night! We were going to dress up but decided last minute not to! It turned out better that we didn't since not many adults were dressed up! Just lots of kids! There was probably a dozen different kind of chili and cornbread! There was games and a haunted house for the kids! We sat in the trunk later to give out candy, which was really fun! I've never been a part of trunk-or-treat, but I think it's a Great idea! One of the ward members was dressed up as Doc from Back To The Future and had a De Lorean! Trent was super excited and it was definetly the hit of the party! Being away from home has made us realize how important it is to have the church in our lives! Everyone has been so friendly! We know more people in this ward then we knew in our Woods Cross Ward and we were there for 2 years! We love our primary class! We've already made so many great friends, I can tell it's going to be hard to say Good-bye when we have to leave! xoxoxo

Hawaii finally!

On top of the volcano! It was freezing. Kent still as good looking as ever

Madi slept through the sunrise! Oh well..we layered her in everything we brought that was semi warm since I didnt pack for less than 80 degrees

Can you tell what Madi did pretty much the whole trip? She was a good little traveler. Hopefully we have started her young enough that she will stay that way! She has now spent 1/4 of her life in Hawaii. Lucky little princess. And she knows it already.

I just typed up this huge long post with Hawaii pictures and then went to publish it and it didn't work and I lost it all...so this is just a test to see if it will work this time! (And I'll remember to save it this time!) I'll have to post Hawaii stuff tomorrow when I don't want to break the computer.

Oscar has been feeling left out lately so I thought I'd open our blog up with him! He's sporting a new pair of shades..oh but just wait, there will be more fun coming!

i guess i'll be the first one to break the rules and not put a picture with my post! i did make that rule right? well sadly i didn't take any pictures last night and don't have any to share with you today! :( but we did have a blast last night! after seeing the movie 'gone baby gone' (terrible language-we almost walked out, then it got better. it was a great story though) nicole and justin decided not to go to dinner with us. i thought p.f. changs was actually tempanyaki, it's not. i haven't been to p.f. changs, trent has once. well we opted not to go the p.f. changs and went to a great resturant chain called Rudy's! it was pretty much like famous daves, but more laid back. we ate dinner on a picnic table since all the cardtables with plastic red and white checkered tableclothes and folding chairs were taken! it was a fun atmosphere! then we went to the new outlet mall and got a few things at old navy and nike outlet! trent hadn't been there and i wanted to show him the new place! finally we came home and watched some of the 3rd season of the office! what a night! we had a blast! for sure pictures next time though! xoxoxoxo

It was by far the coolest thing we have ever done for Halloween.

i decided that every post needs a picture! since what i'm blogging about doesn't have a picture i decided that i would just post madi since she is always fun to look at! :) well tonight me, trent, nicole and justin are going to see 'Gone Baby Gone' and then go eat at p.f. changs! we are craving some good chinese food and that's the best we could come up with since there's no joy luck, unfortunatly! oh other big news! the water in our apartment has been turned off for 6 1/2 hours today! trent used the toilet earlier not thinking about it and i need to use it real bad and can't! it's already been off twice in 2 months! what's going on? t.m.i! kelcey i love the pic! i will for sure come to you if i ever need a hot dog sutured! ha ha! love you all! xoxoxo
